As digital access becomes a global priority, e-commerce businesses must keep up with rapidly evolving accessibility laws. From the United States to the European Union and beyond, legislation is now holding websites accountable for inclusion, and the consequences for non-compliance can be costly.
Here's a global snapshot of accessibility laws that could apply to your website based on where and to whom you sell.
The laws that shape global digital accessibility
United States: Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Although the ADA doesn’t explicitly mention websites, US courts increasingly interpret it to apply to digital spaces. Businesses offering goods or services online are expected to follow WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines to remain compliant.
European Union: European Accessibility Act (EAA)
The EAA, which came into effect in June 2025, mandates that websites and apps be accessible to people with disabilities. It applies to any business selling digital products or services in the EU, even if they are based elsewhere.
United Kingdom: Equality Act 2010
This UK law requires all businesses to make “reasonable adjustments” for disabled users. This includes digital platforms and is often measured against Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) conformance levels.
Canada: Accessible Canada Act (ACA)
The ACA applies to federally regulated businesses and encourages adherence to WCAG standards.
Australia: Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)
This legislation has been interpreted to include web accessibility. The Australian Human Rights Commission recommends WCAG 2.0 compliance as a minimum.
Other countries, such as New Zealand, Norway, and South Africa, have similar laws in place that align with WCAG or require equivalent standards.
